Daniel Barth, Executive Director of Safe Organized Spaces Richmond, is dedicated to transforming the approach to improving the safety and well-being of unhoused and formerly unhoused individuals and the improvement of neighborhoods. Powered by nearly 40 years of direct experience and working alonside pioneers of mental health consumer rights and peer support movements, Daniel is rooted in the approach of peers helping peers. Income self-sufficiency and making healthy choices are essential ingredients for achieving housing self-sufficiency. With significant funding from the city, Daniel led SOS in reimagining community care through the lens of trust, respect, and opportunity. SOS's constituent design process, the heart of Daniel’s vision, empowers individuals to identify their interests and needs. This vision extends to all aspects of the organization, which is staffed and administered by unhoused or formerly unhoused individuals. Before SOS, Daniel built and ran emergency shelters and transitional housing from Hayward to Berkeley, raising over $21 million in new funds. In 2014, he attended the University of Southern California, earning a Master of Public Administration. He is a natural community-builder and cares deeply for people. An avid cyclist and first-generation American from Queens, New York, he and his family are proud first-time homeowners and have lived in Richmond since 2009.
